Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii) Rio Grande Cutthroat. Like other trout species, these distinguishing elements can vary significantly based on the fish’s diet, climate, and season. Rainbow trout can most easily be identified by their red or pink lateral stripe, whiter underbelly, and black or green spots on their back, fins, and tail. While the majority of subspecies are freshwater fish, the steelhead is a coastal rainbow trout that migrates from the sea into rivers for their annual spawn. Rainbow trout thrive in cold, clear freshwater and feed actively on a variety of crustaceans, insects, and larvae. Their abundance in cold water streams is due in part to the high volume of fish raised in hatchery environments, from where they are released into watersheds nationwide. While the species can be found throughout the United States and beyond, rainbow trout are originally native to the North Pacific. Numerous subspecies exist within the rainbow trout family, including the redband and coastal species. We enjoyed Apache Trout Grill for its lakeside location, ambiance, and service that accompanied great fresh food choices.Voracious eaters and hard fighters, rainbow trout have earned their place as one of North America’s most prolific gamefish. My wife got the French Onion soup which was excellent and had lots of melted cheese on top. The fish was cooked well and had great flavor. I got the plank-cooked white fish which was served with rice and fresh vegetables. It was very good and I took the leftovers back to the hotel and put it on a bagel for breakfast, making the hotel breakfast much better than normal. We started with an appetizer of the smoked whitefish dip. Warm and delicious bread was served with butter and an olive dipping sauce that I thought was great. When we were seated we were welcomed by our waitress and given the opportunity to review the menu. Sitting out on the lawn was awesome so arrive early if it is pleasant enough to be outside. The view was great and the setting sun provided great lighting on the boats and the clouds out in the distance. We got some Old Fashions, which were my least favorite part of the visit, and sat overlooking the water and listening to the music. We arrived early for our seating time and went out to the back lawn where they had live music and a bar. This is a great service and worked well, but do not wait too late to get your name on the list because it will also fill up for the evening. They do not take reservations, but once service has started you can put your name on a waiting list that provides you with estimated seating times. We decided to come here for dinner and had a great experience. ![]() Overall, Apache Trout Grill is a fine dining spot that provides a memorable culinary experience with its fresh seafood, beautiful view, and excellent service.īefore we started our trip I found a list of great waterfront restaurants in Michigan and Apache Trout was listed on it. However, the staff is friendly and accommodating, making the wait time more bearable. The establishment can get busy, so guests may have to wait for a table. Cocktails like the Apache margarita and soft drinks are also available, as well as a great selection of wines, such as the Bowers Harbor unoaked chardonnay and the Bower's Harbor Pinot Gris. ![]() The menu features a variety of dishes, including the delicious whitefish dip, the perfectly cooked plank-cooked white fish, and the flavorful shrimp and lobster bisque soup. Guests can enjoy outdoor seating on the back lawn, complete with live music and a bar. Prices are on the higher side, but the quality of the food and service make it worth the cost. The interior design is nautical-themed, with fishing nets, anchors, and other seafaring decor adorning the walls. The establishment boasts a beautiful view of West Bay and a cozy ambiance that makes it a perfect spot for a romantic dinner or a night out with friends. At Apache Trout Grill in Traverse City, seafood is the star of the show.
